Welcome to the first edition of "Sugar Slashing Sunday!" Every Sunday I plan to post a meal that won't spike your blood sugar, or a tip to help regulate blood sugar. These posts will be tagged "diabetic friendly." Thank G-d, most of my readers and I don't have diabetes, but we all need to watch our blood sugar. We all want to be healthier and have more energy, naturally. Stabilizing our blood sugar is the first step to keep our bodies working smoothly.
Did you know that insulin enhances learning and memory? Insulin is important for regulating and metabolizing carbohydrates and fats. If we are wasting our insulin on "busy work" -- taking care of simple sugars, often with no nutritional treasures attached -- our insulin can't do more important jobs. In addition, when you eat simple sugars, your pancreas releases too much insulin quickly; but, because simple sugars are digested quickly, all that extra insulin gets bored when it's done with your snack. Then it sends messages to your brain to feed you more!
By watching our carbohydrate and sugar intake, and eating appropriate amounts and varieties of food, we can manage how quickly our body metabolizes food and gives us energy.
I try to post relatively healthy, natural foods in all my posts. On Sunday I will focus on foods that will help you manage your blood sugar. I hope we will learn together how to eat better and feel better!
Did you know that sweet potatoes have a lower glycemic index (GI) than regular potatoes? (Plus they are full of vitamin A and fiber.) That means that they break down more slowly and release glucose more gradually into the blood stream And that's our goal! Make our digestive system work a little and have a steady flow of energy over I longer period of time.
In these posts I hope to share delicious foods that everyone can enjoy without relying on fat, salt, meat, and artificial sweeteners. If you have diabetes and can point me in the right direction, please do! If I you find a mistake, please comment! I'm new to this, but I will do my best to post tasty meals and desserts with a low GI.

Posts tagged "diabetic friendly" will also be of interest to people trying diets such as the Atkins Diet, the South Beach Diet, and The Zone. However, I will focus on foods that are generally healthy, tasty, and appropriate for people monitoring their carbohydrate intake.
Check back on Tuesday to see more of what I have planned for the new and improved Cooking Outside the Box Schedule!
